    The Cancer Centre

BT4BC is aiming to benefit breast cancer patients, by contributing to the development of the new Cancer Centre at Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick.

Together with the University of New South Wales and the Lowy Cancer Research Centre, the Prince of Wales Hospital has designed and planned a 5,000 square metre modern cancer treatment centre.

This Cancer Centre will provide care for adults and adolescents with cancer.

The Cancer Centre will be headed by Professor Robyn Ward (above), who describes the role of the Prince of Wales Hospital in treating cancer patients and the importance of the Cancer Centre below.

The cancer centre at Prince of Wales has been providing care to patients for over 40 years and provides world-class treatments for all of the common cancers and also for rare cancers. These include:

    • People with brain, bone or gynaecological tumours travel from all over NSW to receive treatment at this centre.
    • Likewise young adult and adolescents with cancer come to the centre because of the unique combination of adult and paediatric oncologists available at this site.
    • The centre also manages people with hereditary cancer referred from all over the state.
    • The radiation oncology unit within the centre is one of the first to be established in Australia and is internationally regarded for its ability to deliver highly complex radiation treatments.
    • The hospital is adjacent to the Lowy Cancer Research which was officially opened in May 2010, on the University of NSW campus. Over 400 scientists undertaking research in adults and children's cancer work in the Lowy centre.

Each year approximately 1000 new patients with cancer come to the Prince of Wales cancer centre for the first time. The Prince of Wales Hospital also accepts over 3000 cancer related admissions each year. Time has now taken its toll on the facilities at Prince of Wales and the inpatient and outpatient areas are urgently in need of reconstruction. The challenge is to create a modern and welcoming environment that will support the patient in their journey, and facilitate the very best of cancer care.
